MODULE 1
This Module contains two sections: Introduction to Energy Auditing and Utility Analysis. The first section will familiarize the student with basic units and terms used in energy auditing. The components and format of an energy audit report will be addressed. Auditing tools and instrumentation will also be discussed.


The second section deals with understanding utility bills. Components of energy bills will be addressed as well as different rate structures. Steps will be shown to minimize utility bills. Energy accounting will be discussed and sample utility bills will be calculated by the students.

MODULE 2

This module contains lighting information that will be beneficial for energy audits. Lighting basics are covered including light color, efficacies and ballasts types. Lamp types and characteristics are addressed with suggestions for audit energy saving recommendations. Lighting calculations will be done by the students and solutions discussed.

MODULE 3

This module contains air conditioning information that will be beneficial for energy audits. Air conditioning basics are discussed including efficiencies, the vapor compression cycle and piping systems. Air conditioning types and components are addressed with suggestions for audit energy saving recommendations. Calculations will be done by the students and solutions discussed.

MODULE 4

This module contains three sections: Heating Systems, Heat Pumps and Ventilation. The first session contains heating system information that will be beneficial for energy audits. Heating basics are discussed including fuel comparisons, efficiencies, distribution systems, boilers, furnaces and radiant heating. Calculations will be done by the students and solutions discussed.

The second session addresses heat pumps. Topics will include efficiencies, operation and classifications. Air source, water source and ground source heat pumps are covered.

The third session introduces the student to ventilation types and characteristics. Energy management opportunities will be discussed.


Objectives:   The student will learn the basics of heating systems, heat pumps and ventilation, and will be able to apply these principles to energy audits.

MODULE 6

This module contains three sections: Domestic Hot Water Systems, Building Envelope and Water Conservation. The first session contains domestic hot water information that will be beneficial for energy audits. Water heating basics are discussed including types and operation, efficiencies and circulation pumps. Heat pumps water heaters are also addressed. Calculations will be done by the students and solutions discussed.

The second session addresses the building envelope. Topics will include heat flows, insulation factors, windows, roofs and walls. Infiltration is also discussed. Calculations will be done by the students and solutions discussed.

The third session introduces the student to water conservation and the water audit. Water conservation methods are discussed as well as leak detection.  Water conservation opportunities will be explained.
